It's probably easier to get to grips with than Sage, particularly for somebody without an accounting background. However, the free edition is extremely limited and I've had a couple of clients with basically simple needs who had to give up on it and move to a paid edition

And there are some cynics on here ( can't think of anyone in particular :D ) who might maintain that almost anything is better than paying for Sage!

I would suggest that you think about what you want to use the bookkeeping software for, raising invoices, vat calculations etc.. then have a good look around, there are plenty of options. Most packages will offer some form of free trial or demo which you can use to guage its suitability.

Why just stop at Quickbooks and Sage?

There are sooooo many packages out there that you could use. What do you find are the benefits of both Quickbooks and Sage and is cost the only driver in your choice?

    Kind Regards

    Neil

My sentiments entirely - a few years ago Sage and Quickbooks were really the only options if you wanted a half decent accounting package - not so now.

I personally really like Accounts Portal I think its much easier and better to use than Quickbooks and Sage. http://www.accountsportal.com/

I must be old, Pegasus Senior was the de facto when I started in this trade.
That and Lotus 2 with the WYSIWYG addon.

Those were before my time - many years of experience is better ;):)

    Tee hee!
I remember a temping job where I arrived and was greeted with - "you must be the lady who knows how to use a spreadsheet"
I didn't but by the time they got back from lunch I did.
It was still an unusual skill in 1988
I seem to have learned a lot of software that way - you are the temp, here is the system, there is the backlog - sort it!
Then I qualified and got practiced at sorting the mess the temps had left....

That makes me ancient. I remember the WYSIWYG addon as an exciting addition to the text-monitor based spreadsheet that we were used to.

Likewise I remember being amazed by Wordperfect for Windows, having got used to Wordperfect for DOS and Wordstar.

Amstrad Wordstar - now we are talking!
And yes, the wysiwyg addon for lotus 2.1 was when computerised documents actually started to work.
The VAX with its Orange screen was posh compared to the green screen IBM mainframes I started on - composing technical messages on a telex machine was always fun.
When I got my white Amstrad luggable with two floppy drives I knew I was on my way

Then again, not all change is progress.
For portable printing, I still wish I could mend my Canon BJ10

Interestingly, to get back to the question,
Sage adopted Windows too early (at 3.01) and it was too clunky so many firms stuck with Pegasus senior.
Then when windows became the norm (at 3.11) , Sage brought out a new version that worked well and Pegasus brought out a dire version and never recovered.
