Its not a legal requirement but most business will take it for peace of mind, it does depend on the business and the risk's that maybe involved.

Most employers are required by law to cover themselves with employers liability under the compulsory insurance act of 1969. It may seem like a further strain on your business finances but rest assured you will be better off in the long run as, should the worse happen; a liability case could ruin your business!

When I got my Employers Liability Insurance (£10million) they also gave us Public/Product Insurance (£1million) as part of the deal. Was only £70 for the year so can't really complain.

I have just taken on a payroll client who is the mother of a disabled person and can now employ staff to help care for him. She will employ staff, for whom I am doing payroll. Her household insurance includes employer liability insurance for this situation, without any additional cost.
