What do people think of promotional products. i.e pens. mugs. note pads, key rings. Is it a good idea to have them with your name and logo on to help promote new business. Should we give them out to companies when cold calling for new business will it help build good working relationships??.

I have had business cards, pens, postcards, flyers,mugs,t-shirts and fridge magnets, keyrings with my details on them and the most useful were:

Magnets
Business Cards
T-Shirt

T-shirt for me as people noticed it and made comments
Business cards - obviouly a neccessity
Magnets..these are great for reminding people who you are and their guests see them too

Re Free gifts, they'd have to look darn good for them to be worthwhile I feel in that regard...not just bland corporate item

I have agreed that cold calling is good but to enhance our business with logo, or from any other company information we can use these promotional products. Because many of peoples are used to these promotional products it create awareness of our brand in the customer or in the market. Its great strategy for marketing.

I think it is a good idea, specially items like bags and calendars. We make a lot of them (eco friendly and fair trade) and are always popular with clients as these bags and calendars have realistic use and are not something to throw away. Also they help clients to remember you for a long term (as long as they use them). You can find a lot of such products on our website: mygreenbag.co.uk

The most important thing is that the promotional item is useful. Pens, note pads, memory sticks and sticky pads are probably the most effective as they can be used daily. Stickers, book marks and folders just end up in the bin!
I don't think you choose a supplier based on the promotional material though!

Promotional Products work because people keep hold of them. How many times have you taken a business card, just to throw it away a few months later having never really looked at it. However, if you have a promotional product which will be of use to you, maybe a promotional pen, mug, trolley keyring or USB stick, people are far more likely to keep hold of them and use them on a daily basis. Just make sure your company name and contact details are on them!

Promotional products still have their place, although try to think a little more about the type of product and aim it at your customer. Most potential customers appreciate computer based products, ie, USB sticks. Of course, pens, keyrings, mugs etc are all still popular choices, but if you want your customers to remember you, try to think outside of the box a little more.

This can really help you promote your business since its a free gift for people...

Custom designed greeting cards (mainly Christmas) are a great way to promote your buiness and send a personal unique greeting to clients. I've been designing a few cartoon greeting cards for clients that feature their products and services and some cases their entire team (in the form of cartoon caricatures). It's fun, not as expensive as you may think and hopefully a valuable and personal promotional tool.

If it s kind a usefull - or fun it will help definetivly. I remember my time with Porsche. Giving the customer a miniatur porsche, enhances their attitude enormously.

Or a little plier - from a plier manufacturer as christmas gift. People were so attracted by the design of the new product. That this gift was an excellent promotion and sales figures increased significantly.

I believe this is good for B2B. They will have that mug in their kitchen, pens on their tables etc. Just make sure they are high quality and they will use them. They will be reminded of your business.

I don't think it works for B2C.

Its good to give out promotional products, it makes everyone happy. Moreover, it helps in brand promotion as well. If you are giving out freebies that contain your brand name, people will will keep it in mind for a long time. Moreover, this also helps in promoting the brand in a much more efficient way.
