Online Directory - How To Start Selling?

Hi,

I am about to launch an online industry specific directory site.

What is the best way to sell the listing to companies to begin with as the site has no other companies on it and has no real worth to begin with?

find the leaders in the industry, the key players, and get their agreement to go in there for free. Then once you have that, pick the leaders in each area and do the same with them. then approach others to pay. However you need to be ranking first, as no-one will pay to go into a directory that isn't ranking for their search phrases.

You're going to struggle to sell the listings until you can prove that you have "x" amount of visitors to the advertisers.

As the poster above suggests - you need to start with free listings to draw in traffic.

Yup it's free ads to start with I'm afraid. Also use their press releases etc for news and articles. You might also try and get some back links. What industry are you aiming for ?
