I'm looking to add some additional archival storage and wondered if anyone has any experience with the Buffalo TeraStation 1.6 Terabyte Network Attached Storage device?

I generate around 40G of data a month, that should give me a couple of years storage. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

I've got no experience with the Buffalo TeraStation specifically, but I've looked after plenty of storage in my time (40 Terabytes, mmm). I'll give you my thoughts after a very quick look on the web.

Am I right in thinking that your going to be using the device for backups?

If so, you'll want to put the device into RAID5 mode (this means that if a disk fails you won't lose anything), that'll take it's storage down to 1.2Terabyte (roughly).

These devices aren't amazingly quick, but if you're using it for backup of 40G data a day, that shouldn't be a problem.

The other gotcha with this device is that the disks are hard to replace. With your usage, hopefully you shouldn't get any failures, but it's something to think about.

From what I've gathered about these devices, and what I think you want to use it for, I'd say it would be a good, cost effective choice. There are limitations to this device, but for your usage I'd say they shouldn't matter.

I found a review at http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Reviews-200-ProdID-TERASTA-1.php which you may find helpful.
