Is it possible

Not sure what your real question is here, I don't see why it matters which eCommerce solution is been used?

All these sites have a very customised store to their requirements, whether the starting point was an existing eCommerce solution is fairly irrelevant.

You could take most the free open source options and create a site like that it's just a lot of work, you would probably end up changing 50% of the code and adding another 50%. Also you are only seeing the front end, it's the backend on these which is more complex, eBuyer must handle thousands of orders a day from a massive product range, they must have massively customised picking/packing procedures, delivery arrangements, incoming stock processing, accounting, returns...etc.

The first one is Magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com)

The 2nd and 3rd one I'm not sure, but they pretty much su*k.

They must do if they're not Magento, right?

Top one briefly loaded for me, but timing out. Gawd its slow - must be hosting it on a vic 20

You can't say Magento is slow, in fact you can't say anything negative about Magento, I heard it was against forum rules :D

As a developer I should give Magento a try but I really don't want to end up in some cult that loses perspective on the rest of the world.

I wasn't suggesting Magento was slow - its just as likely the hosting isn't up to the job. Does that mean I don't get struck off now?

hey so do I !

I don't recommend Magento to everyone..

If a paypal button is all they need then that is what I would recommend. Magento is most definitely not a "one size fits all" solution and for the very bottom end it is simply not appropriate..

Here is a rough matrix of what I would recommend:

Very Bottom:
1-10 products, no need to track stock or any of the core ecommerce features, simply want to take payment and get an email telling me where to ship it... PayPal button

Middle / Bottom:
Budget is the primary concern, want the absolute most features per £ for the absolute minimum expenditure, must run on the cheapest shared hosting....

CRE Loaded osCommerce (or maybe Zen Cart if you prefer) - a bit long in the tooth but fully featured, stable, plenty of themes and extensions etc, very quick and easy to set up.

Middle / Higher
Budget is still a concern but not the only concern, would like to invest in something that is going to work for the next few years however may have specific functionality requirements that can only be met by certain packages out of the box (or with available extensions).

In this scenario I would recommend Magento for everyone unless their specific functionality requirements can not be adequately met by Magento out of the box. I find that if they are not met by Magento then they are met by CRE Loaded. In the vast majority of cases Magento fits the bill.

Higher End and Upwards
There is a budget but it is not restrictive and has some room for a little custom development to ensure that all functionality requirements are met.

At this level, Magento is basically the one to go for. Any specific functionality requirement that is not met by Magento or one of the available extensions can be created bespoke for this site as a custom module.

I might actually make this into a blog post.

Whilst I agree that the bottom two look like custom code dont assume that just because it is a big or successful company that it is truely "bespoke". There are many big players (particularly those originally a physical outlet) that use a standard solution that has been developed by an agency.

Not the sort of thing you can just download off the next but they tend to be as much about hooking into existing legacy systems, CRMs, Stock Control etc as they are front end functionality
