Hosting/Domain

Hi,

How do I proceed with this scenario:

Currently a friend has a website, domain and hosted by a company somewhere.

Their website has now been redesigned and they want to move it to other hosting company, their domain and everything. What steps to take to ensure that everything goes to plan and that the domain will point to their new hosting and the website will be uploaded, emails will be set up etc..

Any help will be much appreciated

Firstly, find out if there are any transfer out fees with the current host. Then find out their procedure for transferring domains out, and the new host's procedures for transferring domains in. They often work differently, and vary again depending on whether it's a .co.uk or .com domain.

Whatever you do, make a backup of the whole site before you even start!

Hi Newbebe,

Generally moving host is quite straight forward, the procedure that we encourage our clients to take it the following: -

1) DO NOT TOUCH THERE EXISTING WEBSITE YET
2) Upload the new website, at the new website host.
3) Make any email accounts and setting that are required.
4) Test it by going to a temporary URL (dependant upon the control panel and the hosting provider)
5) We generally recommend not to move the domain name but to point the DNS records to the new host. This normally takes about 24-48 hours to go through.
6) Once you’re done, then you are up and ready to go, and you can cancel with your existing host.

Like I said generally this is a seamless process, but complications can arise if the host decides to be difficult or if he own the domain name etc.

Before the move I would find out exactly where you stand with you domain name and service contract.

But in order to execute the move with little downtime, its best to keep your exiting hosting account live until your new one is ready.

Good luck
