Geotagged photos and SEO

A client wants to add some photos to his website gallery and add descriptions with his home town to help rank in the local results. However the photos themselves were taken - and geotagged - elsewhere. Does this matter? Should he change the automatic tags on the photos to the location he wants to rank for?

Setting the EXIF info so photos are geotagged is something highly recommended if you care about local search. Generally speaking, it's always a good idea to do so, but the full SEO impact has been up for debate.

I think Tin was working on some of this recently (within the past year or so) and might be able to shed light on it from direct experience. No guarantees though - when there's a lot of fixing and optimising going on, it's often hard to know for sure the impact, if there is an impact.
