Hi out there,

I am planning to use my previous work skills to contract out my services, helping companies with recruitment, write communication plans, write strategy documents, produce business cases or do research. I would like to work from home, maybe with the odd site visit when required.

Do you think this type of service would be useful and would small/medium sized companies be interested?

A bit about me to set the scene..... I have a BSc(hons) in Computing and an MSc in Intelligent Systems, 10+ years work experience. Last job was with a large pharma company as a site IT Manager owning a £3M budget and responsible for 60 staff. I've done everthing from project management to recruitment, strategy documents and European communication plans.

Would really like to hear your opinions on this.

Thanks in advance

My initial reaction is that it might be appropriate for medium to large businesses but not small. The terminology you use is quite "corporate",

You also seem to be moving towards some kind of general consultancy and there are lots of those out there!

Maybe rather than trying to draw on all the skills you have acquired over the years you might try specialising in one - or make your marketing look like you specialise in one - even if you do a number to keep the pennies rolling in

Hi Graham,

Thanks for the comments. I think you're right. Small companies may not be the right target market and specialising is something I need to think about.

I was planning on going to some agencies to see if they have anything to offer?

My "real" business is in hand painted glassware (www.smilingfrog.co.uk), but it's still fairly new and I was hoping to raise funds for marketing etc by contracting out my previous "work" skills.

Thanks again.
