Employing someone while not registered as an employer

Hello all,

I am currently considering employing somebody, however do not need to register as an employer as they will be paid less than the lower earnings limit.

I will be getting the employee to fill in a P46 and will maintain records of the amount paid each week.

I am unsure what other forms I need to complete. Do I need to complete a P38A, even though I am not an employer and therefore cannot fill it out fully.

Will you be claiming tax relief on the amounts you pay the member of staff?

If so how will you be claiming them?

As far as I am aware I will just be filling in my tax return with wages as an expense.

I'm self employed turning over less than £68,000 if that helps.

I'm not an accountant mate, but I've never claimed wages as expenses, it looked strange so that's why I asked. I'm sure an accountant will be along shortly to quiz you
