Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this.
I'm currently employed at a small business, approx. 40 employees. I've queried my payslips a few times as in the past year, my pension contributions haven't been paid to the pension provider. This was then quickly sorted. I've also noticed that the Net Pay on my payslip is always slightly higher than the Payment amount which is what I receive in my bank. The difference is usually between £50-£100 but the Payment amount is what is the correct amount should be so I never really gave it much thought as I knew I wasn't out of pocket as per my calculations.
Last month, I queried this with my employer (who's an accountant) and I was told the difference in those two amounts were the employee pension contributions. This didn't makes much sense since I know it shouldn't be a part of the Net Amount and also the numbers didn't add up. Since then, the Net Amount has disappeared from all of my payslips for the current tax year on our payroll system - I only downloaded the most recent one which shows the "Net" Amount. Since then, I've logged into my HMRC account and realised that according to their records, I only made about £10k this year and paid zero tax. In reality, I made over £30k and paid just under £4k in employee PAYE tax. Now I'm wondering if my NI contributions are being paid in to HMRC. At the moment it says they haven't got the details yet as the year hasn't ended yet. I think it's pretty obvious that there is something fishy going on and I am currently considering my options for alternative employment but I wonder it any of these could affect me, other than having to evidence my contributions to HMRC. I know the tax man isn't going to come after me. Also, what's the rationale behind doing this if, I imagine, eventually it will catch up with people?
Wow, that was a long post! Thanks for reading and TIA for any answers
