Does anyone have any advice on goal setting?

Good afternoon,

What's the best way for business owners to go about setting business goals that will (hopefully) lead to success?

I'm looking for any advice about how to set realistic goals, how best to keep on track, and how to keep motivated if/when things get tough.

Does anyone have any experiences or wisdom they can share?

I have no problem with goals/targets, as long as they are sensible and potentially achievable. Present a workforce with say a 100% sales target increase before commissions will be earned, during a recession year and you will see everyone’s head drop on the spot.

What goals you set will depend on what you wish to achieve.

I used to have goals for turnover, and would continuously try and beat the previous year. Get pissed off when I didn't.

Now I rarely look at turnover, and instead focus more on turning quotes round quicker, concentrate on the right work that suits us, and providing a better service for the customer.

Simple goals, easily achieved, conversion is higher, and I'm not as annoyed!

Personally I don't set myself goals in the recognised KPI context - at the start of the year I set a clear picture of where I want to be by the year end - which might be possessions, money, time or pretty much anything else.

I loosely break it down monthly, but don't stress over it.

At a personal level I find it highly effective, but it wouldn't really work managing a sales team (but might help on a one to one motivational basis)

I always set goals even after all this time
When you have been doing it for a long time you become hard wired to it
Ironically now everybody else my age is looking at slowing down I have set the biggest goal I have ever set myself

Set your personal goal this will the inspire you to set your business goals to achieve what you really want

Set a view of where you want to be in one, and three-five years' time. This doesn't necessarily need to be measurable.

Then set 3, 6 and 12 month targets for how you're going to achieve this. Communicate these to your staff, make sure they know how their targets fit in with the long term aims for the company. Pay them a bonus based on them hitting their targets and the the company hitting its targets.
