Difference between Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Reader?

Can anyone tell me the difference between the free downloads Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.05 and Adobe Reader 8.12?

At the moment, if I utilise the former I often see a message to the effect that the document may have features leter than my reader can support. If I delete Acrobat Reader 5.05 and utilise Reader 8.12, I am often told, especially with web pages, that I need Adobe Acrobat Installed and it will then install Acrobat Reader 5.05 again.

Do I really need both programs, or is there a way I can get Internet Explorer to use the Reader 8.12 by default?

Ones for reading PDFs the other is for editing. I think thats the jist of it
