Hi everyone,
My name is Oliver. I am an Environmental Health student at Liverpool John Moores University. As part of my course, I am working on a project in Health and Safety.
Many of you had to deal with situations at some point during your business when there was an accident, injury, sickness at work, etc. You had to report these to the Health and Safety Executive, filling in accident books or forms. It is also a legal requirement under the RIDDOR to report them. It is probably a lot of paperwork as well. It could be more complicated if you employ people working from home since H&S law applies to them, too. You have to ensure remotely that they are safe while sitting in front of the computer and doing their job. Technology enabled businesses to supervise employees via Teams, Zoom, Messenger, WhatsApp or any other video chat application. We learnt from the past that some of these platforms became famous for concerns regarding data protection. Also, they were originally designed for social media (online meetings with friends, family etc.), not something more serious like a business. Some apps exist to manage your business' H&S, like food hygiene, waste management etc. However, there is no official health and safety app yet, where you can contact the HSE if you need help regarding H&S at work, nor can you contact other businesses to inform them about any safety issues in a single app.
So, I decided to develop a mobile application to manage your health and safety needs. In this app, you can report workplace accidents and injuries. You can contact the HSE or local councils directly, so you don't need to call or email them for anything or use their website to fill in an accident report form. You can do all these in this app. Optionally, you can take pictures to support your report using your mobile phone's camera. This application would also make way for you to build a community. You could contact other businesses and organisations to share information regarding health and safety. You could update everyone with manual handling, lifting, and work equipment-use practice videos, blogs, or anything else in H&S that you experienced and think would be best to share with fellow businesses. You could also contact Health and Safety professionals via this app for advice. If your business has a dedicated Health and Safety team, this app will support their daily work. You could also supervise your employees working from home via this app, so you don't need social media platforms any more.
This app would be a place for official Health and Safety use but be a community-based platform simultaneously. Chats would use secure messaging between users.
I plan to make this app available for all businesses on a non-profit basis. The main thing is that you will be able to build a healthy and safe culture online, helping each other without paying for the use of the application.
Would you support my idea to build this platform?
I would appreciate any feedback from anyone.
