Dedicated server or not ??

I have a potential new client running an Actinic ecommerce site. His site is getting approx 50000 hits a month (unsure of the bandwidth). He is currently on a dedicated server but wants to move hosts (due to costs). What other options apart from dedicated are there ?? If dedicated is the way to go, who should I be looking at to host an Actinic site.

A virtual dedicated server (identical to a dedi but they're logical servers on a physical machine, each with an allocation of the overal power - say 512Mb RAM, 20Gb disk space) may be an option but the low RAM means they can't cope with traffic surges very well.

I'd stick with a dedicated server really - just work out your budget, spec etc and see what fits best. But don't go too cheap - you do get what you pay for which is crucial in the Christmas period.

What is the client getting spec wise and what are they paying?

Is it a managed server or unmanaged?

It does come down to budget, with that number of visitors at the moment (and I'm assuming he wants to increase it) he should look at the dedicated route. This will give him more flexibility with growth.

We have a dedicated server and approx 60K per month and the server has no problems.

what do you call a hit?

To illustrate what I mean:

One of our sites generates 1,391,972 hits / month

The no' of unique visitors is 30,000 / month

I reckon a good shared hosting would be able to handle that ^^.

I certainly don't need one dedicated for something like that. In fact, it is fact! This is on a small account, outside of our own commercial hosting, (I don't like conflicting business with hobby).

Dominic, from www.Vidahost.com, will verify it because he's around these forums and it's on one of their servers.

Hello :)

I think the most important figure is the number of pageviews a site receives - the terms hits, bandwidth, uniques etc are all a little vague. eg a forum doing 200Gb/mo bandwidth is much more demanding than a file download site.

As a guideline I'd expect sites doing <500k pageviews/month, which don't have any special requirements, should be fine on standard shared hosting. Above that you get into semi-dedicated, dedicated, and so on. I tend to recommend dedicated systems to ecommerce clients for security and guaranteed performance, and of course no resource issues if the site should see a rush of visitors.

A VDS / dedicated server is often required for PCI compliance, too, which in turn is required if you handle card payments on-server.

we have just gone through the same thing, but we are getting 40,000 hits per day - arguments go both ways as some told us not to go for the dedicated server whilst others told us it was a must

Really the hosting co will advise, but depending who they are will mean different advice

Best i can offer is to contact www.pcs-net.com
they have been really good with us and honest on what we need.
I dont really think you need a dedicated server at present but do ask some experts
