CVEDs and importing supplements

Hi all

I have pet supplements sitting at the dock awaiting entry, some of which are of animal derivatives, eg salmon oil.

The last consignment was Dec 2010 and was covered under a general import licence. It seems that this general licence has been revoked, no one seems to know when.

I now appear to need a CVED: Something that cannot be applied for retrospectively.

Ultimately I have been led to believe that the products in question have to be sent back to the USA whilst I apply for the CVED and then I have to pay to ship them back to the UK and provide the Port Authorities with the CVED at the point of entry.

I have no idea how long the process of applying for a CVED takes but in the interest of saving money I wondered if I could, for example, ship the stuff to Ireland and then back to the UK, rather than to the USA and back to the UK (or do they have to leave the EU, raising the possibility of another non-EU European state).

Any helpful suggestions?

Try to contact Customs and suggest them if your thinking is possible?
I am sure they will advise you rightly.

I'm new to the forum and realise this is an old post but hope it got sorted out OK. Unfortunately you are only allowed to re-export outside the EU (or get goods destroyed). They tend to be very black and white about this.

As an update- Port Health pointed out that the interpretation of the rules were even more stringent than those covering human supplements. I suspect that they raised the issue with DEFRA because shortly after DEFRA decided that we wouldn't need catch certificates, CVEDs, health certs etc.

In short we didn't have to pay to have them destroyed/sent out but we did have to pay for extended storage whilst the situation was being discussed.

We later discovered that the general licence for importing products containing fish had been revoked back in March. I don't understand how others managed to continue to import salmon oil in the meantime but I am grateful to the helpful staff at Port Health and to DEFRA.
