Confused about keywords and descriptions.

Hello,

I am a bit confused with keywords and descriptions, as I have been getting differing information from various sources.

Basically my site has over 130 different pages and my understanding is that it would be good to give each page a title, keywords and a description, so that when the spiders/robots go through my site they may index each page individually and then these pieces of information will be important. I have already done the main pages and these have been picked up and the description used as the main text in the search results list. I now want to do the rest of the site, mainly the shop and as there are currently over 1000 products it is very segregated and would be good to get each page listed separately.

For example,

Accessories - Adult Accessories - Women - Jewellery - Bracelet

Each is a page in its own right.

I am confused by the rules re. keywords and descriptions because in some places it says that the keywords need to be specific to the particular page, not the whole site and the description also needs to be relevant to the contents of that particular page and be keyword rich with those relevant keywords. In other places, it is saying the importance of the keywords chosen is to improve page rank and the only way to achieve that is by having the same keywords listed and directed at your site all over the place, i.e. links, directories, PPC, etc. If the latter is the right option, then surely I should not be setting up individual information for each page?

Before I spend hours doing this, would someone please clarify for me what I am supposed to be doing?

Thank you.

Kate.

Hi Kate,

You should have diffrent pages optimised for thier individual product range.

Not wishing to confuse you more with the science of SEO - why not take a look at the SEO report we prepared for you so you can see the different factors that govern the ranking of individual pages within Google.

Either that or we could prepare a report for you for each page and you could just follow the instructions - see http://www.matrixxhosting.com/search-engine-optimisation.shtml

Hi,

Yes, it is good practice to make sure each page is tagged correctly and that they contain relevant descriptions etc...

For the long term though the most important thing to remember is that a "well optimised" site takes a lot more effort... You need to make sure that your site is ranked well amongst all the top search engines (not just Google), and having tags and descriptions on each page won't guarantee this.

If you need any help with SEO feel free to contact us to run through some options.

Ok a quick course in the basics

Title - very important to many search engines should be short and contain key words and phrases specific to the content of the page

Keywords - not so important now but put relevant ones in if you want

Description - important - it should contain the key words and phrases you want people to find that page with and should be written in clear concise english.

The other important thing is to get links from other sites to your home page and other pages within your website that contain the keywords that you want the page to rank for.
