The Movie Booth

Hi everyone,

We're looking for alternative Chip and Pin solutions for our kiosks, and I wondered if there were any techo specialists who could answer the following query.

Are there any software systems on the market which enable you to allow customers to enter their pin on-screen?

Our kiosks have a touch-screen facility, and I was wondering if we could integrate a sofware into our current system which means that when customers entered their card they could key in their PIN number on screen rather than having to do this through a keypad.

Look forward to any replies.

im not aware of any solutions that would allow you to use a touchscreen for entering the pin. I know every touchscreen kiosk system i have used has had a seperate pin pad (the argos units and the kiddicare units). You would need one of the card readers anyway, so shouldnt be a problem to use their pinpad.

Having said that, the guys who would really know are yespay and commidea. These are the two chip and pin system integrators that are probably appropriate for this level.

Hi,

You'll probably find due to the security implications the pin can't be provided from a 3rd party source when processing chip and pin payments. However, I'm sure you can integrate the number pad in to your machine, take for example london train ticket machines where their pad is not external although seperate from their touch screen.

Best,

For my sins, I happen to know a bit about Chip & PIN machines. The standards for communication with the card and handling the PIN are laid down by a group called EMVCo. They have to certify any software systems that do this job, and the acquiring banks have an approval process for new systems.

Chip & PIN machines all run something called an EMV LEvel 2 Kernel. If you want to handle the PIN entry, you can buy a Level 2 Kernel that will run on most machines. You can then use cheaper, Level 1 Card Readers and do the Chip & PIN processing on your target system.

You can buy a approved Level 2 Kernel from www.stspayments.com , but the resulting software solution will still need accrediting by the acquiring banks. If you use an on-screen PIN Pad, there might still be questions that the PIN capture was not secure.

Oh yes, and you'll then have responsibility for the configuration of the card readers and the security keys for each type of card.
