Chasing an old Pension?

Has anybody on here had experience chasing an old Pension?

Background: A former work colleague from around 40 years ago who I've maintained contact with, found out, in 2021, that he had a pension with our long since disappeared employer, although he's adamant that he wouldn't have taken it out himself? I'm guessing an employers pension of some sort?

Long story short, he's given me the name of the original Policy holder -Phoenix Life, the Scheme name and Plan number (personal to him) and I've made contact with them, to be told they cannot find a pension scheme in that name?

I've searched on Gov.uk and drawn a blank, that there is no pension scheme in the old companies name. Except there clearly is?

Any ideas?

The name may have changed over the years with only a small trace/reference to the old name on file.

The best way to find your pension is using your own details and NI number etc - they should be able to check against this.

I know Financial Advisers are able to approach Pensions providers to hunt out old and forgotten pensions - I would suggest contacting your IFA, if you have one. If not you may be able to use the Gov.uk search: https://www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details

I've already tried the gov.uk site and nothing comes up, and had a search by NI number done and a again a zero.

Edited, UPDATE: I've just re-contacted Phoenix Life (now Abbey Life) who this time around found the scheme and I can now put this to bed happy that I'm no better off than when I started this thread.
