I've created a business model for an online business placing itself in the art industry but also the gift section. It would involve the work of several artists working on a freelance basis who will create customized artwork.

I've emailed a few artists from deviantART but I'm yet to receive any replies. I thought this would be quite appealing with the economy and such but I'm not so sure now.

Where is the best place I can find out information about setting up a business in the art/gift industry? Someone I could talk to would be preferable but any information is appreciated.

The problem is this bit:

That smacks to me like you just want someone to sit and paint by numbers, from a colour chart. Something that can be done in PhotoShop.

Artists are creative people, they don't tend to just sit and paint with someone standing over them telling them what colours to use.

No I'm not trying to control creativity at all. It's just drawing caricatures. The only customized part is that the artist would use a customers photo/picture as reference, then recreate it in their own style.

I think artists haven't taken up your offer, possibly because they don't know you and perhaps because there are a few sites like this already?

Yeah. Tell that to Sothebys, Larry Gagosian, Damien Hirst, The Andy Warhol Foundation etc etc.
Tell that to someone who pays about £70k for a week at one of the four major art fairs.
Why do you think Andy Warhol called his studio 'The Factory'?
Art is an industry. Maybe parts pretend to be very posh, while other parts are ducking and diving trade (with big numbers), but it's an industry.
