Thanks to recent changes in search algorithms, some of the old school techniques are reclaiming popularity.

One such technique is the use of Angela Edwards (angelasbacklinks) packets. Each month she publishes 30 high pr websites where people can register and then create profiles, add comments and/or stories, and generally participate in a community of one type or another.

I'm curious as to whether other online marketers here at UKBF:
  • Have tried these in the past
  • Are using this approach now
  • Plan on undertaking it in the future

Used it and abused it (joke) - imo if you follow her too closely you will get a lot of junk alike with most of these techniques

It's nothing spectacular, social bookmarking is on the up too you should look at that.

At the end of the day - it's a trend, follow trends and you will get penalised at some point

Personally I have found there to be no deviation in the popularity of social bookmarking - if it's a quality bookmark done for the correct purposes then it can be fruitful.

Agreed however sometimes there can be good practice trends which will last for the foreseeable future:)

I see social bookmarkings on page one of Google, so I can doubt otherwise.

We set the trends :D

Do you mean you can see the Social Bookmark listing being within the SERPS? if so, this will be great for referral traffic but I can't see it passing over any further link juice than it already does (being a good bookmark) so it has improved for referral but maintained SEO benefit.

Some social bookmarking websites/software have been hit hard such as Pligg due to the increasing amount of automated software targeting these platforms which is a shame as Pligg is one of my favorite Social Bookmarking platforms.

They create a shift in algo which reborns the old junk, trends come and go

A lot of things aren't good for a 'link' but are quite frankly, and a social bookmark which brings traffic is even better imo (SEO & traffic)

Backlinks enable you to keep track of other pages on the web that link to your posts. For instance, suppose Alice writes a blog entry that Bob finds interesting. Bob then goes to his own blog and writes a post of his own about it, linking back to Alice's original post. Now Alice's post will automatically show that Bob has linked to it, and it will provide a short snippet of his text and a link to his post. What it all works out to is a way of expanding the comment feature such that related discussions on other sites can be included along with the regular comments on a post.

Is this strategy, profile backlinking still effective?

I just did a quick test on one of Angelas sites by creating a profile, setting up a blog on there, making one welcome post, and then one content post.

Aside from that, I did nothing else, other than view a few community member blogs and photos and made a couple friends by commenting on their recent posts (without any links or promotion in my comments).

So, profile + 1 blog post + a few comments on photos. No other SEO.

That single post resulted in being ranked in top 100 google.co.uk and top 50 google.com for a phrase relating to Scotland SEO (a very competitive and decent volume phrase).

Based on that recent test alone, I would have to say that SOME of the 'Angela backlinks' do indeed work. The test will continue with a few other posts and additional comments on photos and blogs within the domain. I may report back later if anything remarkable happens.

Your mileage may vary.

Hello
I think that Never create profile backlinks directly to your money. Thats the easiest way to get your site banned. If at all, you can create profile links for you backlinks....i mean they are OK as tier 2 or even tier 3 links.
