Has anyone here started a company or is anyone here thinking of starting a company that requires specialized information or a specialized service from an established company?
For instance, and the following are just examples off the top of my head to convey my point:
* There is an established company called CowMilkers who create machinery that milks cows. Your startup is a farm that requires new machinery to milk lions. Because of the difference in dimensions between a cow and lion, you need CowMilkers to adapt the cow milking machines that you buy from them or for them not add to the machinery whatever mechanism it is that makes it suited to milking cows.
* You want to transform iPhones into true portable gaming devices with a standard control pad - as opposed to soft buttons onscreen (these get in the way of gameplay). You can make do with the iPhone's single circle button for now, but if you can prove to Apple that your games are popular, you'd like Apple to create versions of iPhones with a control pad or you'd like Apple to allow you to create a fit-on device that has a control pad on it (think of how tablets can attach a keyboard).
So that kind of idea. Your idea kind of depends on another company either allowing you access to their data or you need some unique service from them or you need to have some kind of formal relationship or agreeement with them.
Is anyone here doing that kind of thing? Can you talk about how you got that company to listen to you and work with you?
