    Hi

My quarterly VAT return is due on 7th April. IIRC that is actually meant to be the last working day before 7th April. So I would normally post it midnight tonight so it is posted as sent today.

I am a bit behind so dont think I can complete the return tonight, I looked up HMRC website again as well as sign into the HMRC gateway, there;s no mention of the last working day bit, It just says the deadline for VAT return in 1 month and 7 days after the quarter. the HMRC portal just mentions the date 7th April.

Is my understanding incorrect regards to the last working day caveat, or has it been changed recently given everything is electronics and direct debits can be made 7 days a week now?

The reply was entirely correct and succinct. Why do you consider it unhelpful?

    (a) it presumed that the return was filed late, which later transpired to be incorrect
    (b) it ignored the fact that even if it were late there may be no fine if this was the first breach in a year
    (c) the OP would be unlikely to "enjoy" any fine that was levied
    (d) nothing was "made up" and and the OP had already used the caveat "if I recall correctly"

So, quite a lot really from a single-line contribution?

I think Jaydee explained themselves very well. Their reply was confusing, deadline is 7th April. I posted on 5th April. I even made it clear that I will be done by Sunday, if the deadline applies on weekends. They posted a message saying I'll be fined and then on the same breath it's OK to post up til 7th. It was a confusing post.
