Hi,

I am self employed and used an old van strictly for work up until 1st March 2019, I then purchased a new, second hand work van for £3,000. Can I claim on fuel/mileage for my old work van from 6th April 2018 - 1st March 2019 and then the £3,000 for my new van? I understand I can only claim the capital expense on my new van through AIA and not the fuel/mileage from 1st March 2019 - 5th April 2019?

Thanks.

You can claim the actual expenses you incurred for the old van or you can claim simplified expenses for the mileage, however if you have used one of these methods previously then you must stick to it.
With the new van you can claim AIA on the cost and any expenses or claim the mileage but once again once a method is used you must stick to it

Thank you for your reply. I have previously stuck to the mileage method. So I can use the mileage method for 6th April 2018 - 1st March 2019. Then for this tax year only, use AIA for the £3,000 van purchase and no mileage usage for the new van from 1st March - 5th April. Then for the tax year 2019-2020 I will use the mileage method for my new van. Is this correct?
