Selling an idea to a business

There a big UK portal (that you all probably used). I have an idea how to make it better. This is additional feature so it's not about changing their business model. A similar portal has a similar feature (similar area) but quite different and not so useful.

This is only an example - I have plenty of ideas like that and I often suggest them to companies for free and they get implemented. But I thought, hey, why can't I make money on it?

I don't want to start a similar portal only to add that feature to my own portal - it does not make sense and I don't have the passion for their business. How can I monetize such idea?

A ton of companies do this anyway, its just an open road map of features their own users suggest and vote for.

The ones that get the most up votes get priority and eventually implemented.

If you're just one guy who is suggesting an idea what are the chances they are going to pay you, when there is no validation if the majority of users want this feature.

If its a big portal we all know and have used, how are you going to even talk to the right people in the business, to then get them to pay you before you tell them this idea.

Hi,

Thank you all for taking time to read and respond.

I agree, this is not simple and I don't even know if it's really possible. But, imagine you own a company and someone comes over and says, I'll tell you an idea on how to improve your business, if you like it and implement it within 10 years you pay me X amount of money. If, after pitching, you like the idea, for extra 50% I won't go to your competitors. It would be up to you to check if there is need for the feature in the market and there is no cost attached to just listening to it, unless you are already working on this feature or have it on your road map which is not likely. But if the idea is good and makes you money, I'm sure you would be happy to pay. This is the model I was thinking about. I don't think I could offer my services of implementing the feature, as their IT should be capable of doing it. The idea exactly describes what needs to be done and it is possible with today's technology.

There is no guarantee the idea is good. I have a record of having my ideas implement and the companies usually offered their services for free to thank me, so some of my ideas do have value. Some companies are crowd-sourcing ideas, but to do that you need users that do care or are passionate about what you do. Most people just use things and move on.

I agree, talking to the right people is another obstacle, but Linked-in and going to conferences could help.

Yeah, I may be a dreamer, but many businesses started with just that! :) I was wondering if anyone was doing that before, but looks like I'm the first to the market :) I'll read the book about licencing - it looks like a similar idea.

Hi,

Thank you for all your advice. I followed it. As the website is one of the modern SPA pages that is supported by nice API I managed to write a program that gives me a competitive edge over other users of the portal and it started to make me money. Thanks for advice!
