We admin an industry specific, not spammy, directory and have had a few poorly written emails form companies operating for business' who added their sites asking for removal.
I expect in a few months they will be resubmitting their sites.
Word of mouth from existing clients has always been our main source.
Other than that it seems to be local searches on Google which bring in outside enquiries, though I must admit we've had less enquiries over the last six months coming in, presumably due to the economic climate.
I suppose you have your answer but just to add we've set up a couple of interspire ecommerce sites in the past. While it can be a little 'buggy' and the support and communication has always been really rather poor the management and layout of the software, for both administrator and customer...
Well written post Baz, seems about right to me, though I might be biased I suppose.
I do worry, for the client more than anything, when I see people offering the world on a website for £199. Either those people are underselling themselves and working well below minimum wage or else what...

I wonder what, if any, the hake up is on unsolicited emails? Is it just an...
It really depends I suppose, the main project I was thinking of was more involved than just a logo as there were various other parts of the site that required some illustration but the majority of people working in logo design I've known have tended to be Graphic Design orientated and whist some...
Quite.
The number of business I see who have been guided to either buy automated software to shoot out their latest updates or else are just posting links to their own website day in and day out and who are mostly broadcasting to a bunch of spam bots and other business' doing the just same. If...
How are you planning to distribute, at random or at a specific tech event?
If it was done at random you'd be hoping that someone thinking of having a website, or looking for cheaper hosting, would be amongst the ones that happened to be curious enough to have a look.
It does seem very much a...
It would depend on the project. If a serious logo was required then we'd hire a logo/graphic designer but we have had a couple of occasions when something more creative and hand drawn was required and we have found and hired illustrators in the past for those occasions.
