I would carry on link building & developing the site.
You should choose between non www and www. because you have two versions of the domain indexed and 301 one or the other.
And clean up your hidden footer links
Your best bet would be to do a search for a description and see how many results show, if its many then have them rewritten or create your own snippets via any other specs given on the Xml.
Non spanish links can work but for the best effect you should be looking at geo-targeted & same language links.
Sub domain still have weight and hold authority in my opinion. I would say it's mostly down to preference but in Google Webmaster Tools you can set location for the folder or domain.
SEO prices are mostly dependent on the niche or market you operate and your location which can help show competitive that field is.

I agree - think you should get some content on there. Does it have to be 600 pages at once ?
I would disagree, if you are on top with your keyword research and have an SEO strategy already in place then you may find that adding new content is all your website needs for extra exposure.
But I doubt a blog writer will go that far for you - so without knowing what to write about you are in...

Have you looked at how seasonal traffic was prior to purchase, I would imagine news sites have spikes with popular stories etc.
Were there always ads on the site? or is this new?
Did the web host change?
