Hi Bignose
Sorry, only just logged in to see your posts today. Sounds like you have the answers now anyway, but if anyone else is looking for the same thing here's my similar experience of plodding through...
I also had the Starter/P45 box pre-ticked after upgrading and puzzled about it, but...
Bignose, I wouldn't be tempted down the route of trying a new install and trying to bypass the year-end submission, however desperate. Not that I've done it or tried it, but once familiar with Instant Payroll (which, from your last post, I think you also use?) and knowing the process from many...
Yay! Finally a successful submission via Sage (Instant Payroll), at my first try this morning at about 9.45.
Good luck to others: hope you make it too.
Quite. Well, except no extra staff for us - it's me or nothing :D But yes, the waste of a day (and night!); and I also wanted the time to...

HMRC are still experiencing lengthy polling delays for year end 2012/2013 P35 submissions. If you are submitting year end 2012/2013 please continue to check this page for status...
Kulture: spotted something which sounds reassuring about your Saturday non-payday. I can't post links yet, so maybe this'll work but you'll have to tweak it to get there:
accountingweb.co.uk / group-thread / paying-employees-6-april-2013
(see the first comment there, which has a further link)
Like an earlier poster I use Sage, and as of this afternoon it was still blocking Y/End submissions as Sage themselves hadn't been able to successfully send test submissions, or receive an acknowledgement, and clearly feel that until they can, it's "safer" if we don't either -- I guess in case...
