For and Against using Cloudfare for SSL

Many hosts include Let's Encrypt SSL within the package. Explore the options as it may be simpler to find a host that offers this in the package.

Looking for a reputable company who can build me a website

I'm too busy at the moment to offer, but in my opinion, things to look for is someone who will build a website on an open source system such as Backdrop CMS, Drupal, WordPress, etc rather than someone who will build on a proprietary system such as Wix, Squarespace etc. This will ensure that you...

Searching for web addresses, which then get reserved?

Some registrars do this. If I am not sure about a domain I try to ping it from the command line (any can do it. For example: ping wibble.co.uk > Ping request could not find host wibble.co.uk. Please check the name and try again. AVAILABLE ping wibble.net Pinging wibble.net [184.82.118.196]...

Alternative to registering on Google business

I don't think that is correct; there are lots of businesses at home addresses that don't have signage but are listed quite happily

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'xsl.so'

Often different PHP versions have different PHP extensions enabled. If your host is something like cPanel, Look for something like "Select PHP Version". Then look for the `xsl` extension in the list and activate it then save.

Is there any need for Adobe Acrobat anymore.

If you have PDFs on your local machine or local network, you'll need some program to open them and view them (though I think this can also be your browser). The free version of Adobe Acrobat for viewing works fine and apart from showing features in the user interface that you have to pay for it...

    DisplayPort to HDMI

I've used Display port to HDMI for years with no issues. Display port doesn't carry the audio that HDMI does but for monitors that is rarely a concern

Closure of HMRC's online filing service

I am in the same boat. One I'm looking at that has promise is BC Easyfiler Their prices look quite reasonable if you are used to preparing accounts yourself. Another low cost one on my list is QMS SA2000

    Web security

These are just another form of 2 factor authentication. When I worked for the police we used our force ID card with a password to log onto our PC. With web, as @DontAsk says, you can now use passkeys which identify you on that device to a remote service. I use this regularly for SSH but web is...

A cautionary tale about trade marks and company names

When I was a sole trader, the business name I had selected was inadvertently similar to another similar business in the same region (despite the name having no regional connection). I actually got contacted by a client of the other company asking for details to pay me. I corrected their...

    Making PC wireless

Newer dongles are nearly always backwards compatible so you can go for one that supports a newer specification as it will still support that. But there is little point in paying a premium to get newer if you can't benefit from it.

    Making PC wireless

I've used USB dongles with no problems (mainly for Raspberry Pi). Many will use the same chipset, but it is worth looking for a reputable band which will have the capabilities it advertises rather than some devices that will claim one thing but not deliver. Normally you can tell by the fact...

With the switch off of land lines I'm thinking of going to mobile tech...

You should be able to port your landline number to a VOIP SIP line. You can then use VOIP phones, apps, or divert to mobile. There are some here who are experts at this

Phone number on back of clothing?

Is it worth encouraging her to get a VOIP number that can keep her personal number private?
