Hi Rob, I actually think you can monetise this and have some experience in this World.
I actually run a local community website myself.
Drop me a message - would be good to take a look at your site.
This advice comes from Gary V - text everyone in your contacts: 'Do you know anyone that may need a website designed?' Follow up with a bit more of a personal message... 'I've just started my own company and would love to get some new clients...
You may not need to do any paid advertising.
Make sure you are on Google My Business and have filled out everything that's possible to fill in on there. Also add as many photos as you can and as regularly as you can.
Also, set yourself up on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - you can post on...
Google My Business and social media would be a great way to promote your business.
I help a number of local businesses with their social media and have seen fantastic results.
A local builder received 17 FB messages asking for quotes (loft conversions, double extensions etc) within the first...
I realise this is an extremely old thread... but was wondering how the OP got on?
Also, if you had 600 businesses signed up and needed to raise £20k, could you not sell something to the 600 businesses at just £33.33 each?
I've set up a sports forum and would like articles, comments and ultimately, users to be rated... with either a 5 star rating or a points system - similar to this site.
Could anyone recommend any plugins for this?
Thanks!

Thanks @webgeek and I've noted how FB prioritise engagement.
Engagement would certainly be the focus of this business and we would want opens/clicks etc from emails sent out.
Again, I know there's a lot of dependents on this, but any ideas on values on X, Y, Z opens/clicks etc? I know it...
It's not worthless though in reality... there's plenty of people making a fortune from promoting brands on social media, because they have followers, who brands want to promote to.
With email marketing I know there may be scales, like X amount for opens, Y amount for clicks... but just...
I'm currently looking in to a project, with the business model based on social media followers and email subscribers.
I know the likely answer is 'how long is a piece of string' but does anyone have experience of what 50k, 100k, 250k likes/follows are worth in terms of selling...
If you haven't got the work to expand currently, why to you want to?
Could you partner with another local one man band who has the work to expand?
Or otherwise take steps to increase your client base. Do you leave cards with your clients that they could pass on? Do you post bus cards/...
Not necessarily for the unemployed... I was thinking it would be more attractive for students or mums/dads that don't work and may have a few hours a day while kids are at school.
