Thanks for all your replies.
The first thing I did was take the drive out of its enclosure and connect up via SATA. The rattle is something to do with the drive mechanism itself not the enclosure so as Matthew says, I really don't want to risk doing more damage to it, so it definitely isn't...
Unfortunately you need to know they've done it before you can tell them they shouldn't have! Given that there is a knocking sound I really don't want to keep trying the disk - it does spin up but as soon as you try to connect it to a PC it starts making a nasty rattling so I have no idea whether...
Oh I really wish they did!
Unfortunately a home user with classic scenario of photos moved from laptop to external drive - no copies. Breaks my heart when this happens as I know how expensive the recovery can be.
I have warned them to expect a large bill
Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a good company for hard disk recovery? I have a client who has knocked a desktop external drive onto the floor. It will not connect to the PC anymore - just has a horrible death rattle!
James
Thanks all. Plenty of food for thought!
I'm leaning towards the hosted desktop solution but it will really depend on what the remote internet connection is going to be like. The company will be involved in construction projects with temporary offices on site.
I do like the sound of getting...
Thanks guys. I've been looking at 365 but I'm just concerned about the amount of team storage - 10GB + 500MB per user. Might need the Midsize Business as that appears to allow the option to buy more team storage.
Hi all,
I have an existing client who has just been awarded a major contract and needs a cloud-based system as they will be operating from multiple sites.
This is something way beyond what I can offer (Windows SBS is about my limit!) so I need someone to point me in the right direction.
They...
Hmm, the tactics really don't change, do they?!
I had one of these calls 3 years ago - exactly the same technique only that was for the "Child Safety Initiative". Bet it is the same bunch.
They got a bit persistent with threatening letters so in the end I replied to them stating that I knew...
I'm so sorry to hear about that. It is always one of my concerns that they will pull the plug on us by making a spurious ill-informed decision about something we sell.
Would definitely be useful if Paypal and eBay would communicate.

Problem of course with eBay is that it makes its own rules and will never give its reasons.
Your best bet is to try contacting Powerseller Support on the phone. We've had more minor problems in the past and it is impossible to resolve them using any of the online contact methods.
Are you selling the OEM software with appropriate hardware components? This appears to be one of the eBay requirements:

Looking at the Intel logo, that machine is about 5-6 years old. There is unlikely to be a BIOS reset button but there might well be a jumper on the motherboard which will reset the BIOS on next boot. Alternatively, you could remove the CMOS battery on the motherboard and reinstall as this...
I've seen a Dell machine lock on that screen but without the vertical lines. I pulled the RAM and reseated it and it solved the problem. It hasn't recurred.
If that doesn't work, try swapping the power supply.
