    Well that didn't work. I unplugged it and restarted - still says preparing for ages and then nothing.... any further suggestions?

    I've haven't had this happen before, there is plenty of space available and it's an external hard drive. I will stop it, unplug it and restart. Fingers crossed. If it doesn't work, i'll be calling on you again. thanks guys :)

    It says there is plenty of space available that is what is confusing. It's still 'preparing' now.... not sure how long to leave it before switching it off. If i do switch if off, will I damage anything?

    Bit of a random question guys, but I use Time Machine to back up everyday and for some reason it is stuck on "preparing" for ages and not backing up. Just wondered if anyone can shed some light as to what to do? I've shut it down and re-started but when i tried it again, it's still stuck...
