loudBANG design

thats great, one of the most annoying things about adding your domain to free indexes is when you have to spend 5-10 minutes going through the set up and then at the end of it you find out you have to pur their ugly logo on your page. Not ideal for a freelance designer.

you have saved us a lot of time.

This is a really awesome list, but you should not mistake business directories with website directories. Some of the directories that you've listed are website directories, and their value (unless they are niche directories, which they aren't) is very low.

The business directories are mostly for you to list your business, not your website. If you do not have a brick n' mortar business "attached" to your website it might prove difficult to get a listing on some of these.

Obviously you have to get your business website 'out there' but directory websites are one of the most annoying things to wade through when searching for something on the internet - it's like playing pass the parcel, only instead of tearing off paper you're wading through dodgy looking websites that offer a (usually incomplete) summary of the business you are looking for.

I didn't even know someone is using the generic website directories for anything else except to get a 0 authority link from there. It has been like this for some time now, and you mentioned one of the main reasons for that.

Till date I'd known about only dmoz and jayde!
Unfortunately that is because the rest are really of little importance and have not been for about three years.

I wouldn't necessarily assume that we're devaluing Yahoo's links, I just think it's not one of the things we really need to recommend. If people think that a directory is going to bring them lots of visitors (I had a visitor from the DMOZ once), then it's obviously fine to get listed there. It's not something that people have to do though :).

Google Drops Yahoo & ODP Directory from Guidelines

This was going to happen - you know it! The ODP's and Yahoo's dir offering was not specialised advert placement - thus both dirs are only general tools with little traffic flow being able to actually convert.

A few years back on another forum, I made a prediction on the directory industry, and that was that the all-purpose directories will cease to exist, and the new breed of niche search tools will emerge and replace the unworkable general old directories that remain.

Google is about related weblinks/content, and since the all-purpose dir model got 'slapped', wasnt this always on the cards - a good ole fashioned clean-up was needed for a long time, and maybe this is the start of things to come. If it is, imagine all those millions of directory client links, suddenly being made worthless eg: directory A has say 5000 clients, now those links wont show up in search results, or at least be deemed unworthy as they linked within unrelated resources.

This means, that thousands of websites will have to re-build at least hundreds of lost dir weblinks.

The off-site SEO game will be hit hard!

Do searches for things like:

Link Submission "keyword"
URL Directory "keyword"
Website List "keyword"

Download the MozBAR off SEOMoz, or check out the sites metrics on OpenSiteExplorer and away you go. Good results can be made from lots of low value websites, but try to put more importance on the bigger 1's, but remember although a site with better Domain Authority will probably pass more link juice, the more links on the page you are submitting to, the more that potential link juice is diluted across the sites. Less links = more link link juice for you.

Same thing can be done for blog/forums etc;

"Keyword" guest post
"Keyword" blog
"Keyword" blogger
"Keyword" guest writer

Try and mix it up. Directories are great but variety is best. A continue steady growth is a plus in G's eyes too. 10 a day would be better than 20 on Monday, and 20 the next Monday.

If Google ignored name-and-address-listing directories it would massively clean up the search results for local business searches. Hopefully they would distinguish between these (Yell, Accessplace, ThomsonLocal, 192) and the content-rich sites like Freeindex, Qype and Thebestof which tend to have full pages of information and/or reviews about each business.

There is no credibility behind the source of that article at all. The company itself creates software to automate directory submission. Spam blasting essentially.

That said however, there are some decent sources in your list, most are worthless though. The key is identifying generic / low quality or unethical directories from legitimate places to list your business that Google will value as a citation source.
