Hi
A lot of my keywords say low search volume so my ads aren't showing for those keywords but when you type these keywords in google ads are showing, any ideas how I can get mine to show? I have set all my keywords to exact match to keep wasted clicks down so should I change the low volume ones to phrase or broad perhaps?

also alot of the keywords are now saying this keyword doesn't currently trigger any of your ads which I don't understand as the keywords are mentioned in the ad and I have a high quality score of mainly 7's and a couple of 9's for these keywords. I only have 1 ad setup for each ad group which is a different set of keywords.

Hope this makes sense?
Thanks
Lianne

Hi Lianne...

You will find that with very targeted exact match KWs, that Google class them LSV KWs. The reason why other ads are showing for your exact match search query is those advertisers will be targeting using either phrase or broad (modified or standard).

To get your ads to show you should consider using BMM (Broad Match Modified) in association with a negative KW list that you maintain on a weekly / bi-weekly basis (dependant on your search volumes & clicks).

I would do this in a separate ad group or campaign (where possible I like to separate KW match types).

WRT to your ads not serving, have you checked the ads with the ad preview & diagnostics tool within AdWords? This will tell you why the ad isn't being served.

Also just to note it is best to have at least 2 ads running per ad group so you can split test elements within your ad, different headlines, etc.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for replying. Some of the keywords that said they weren't appearing because they didn't trigger any ads seem to be appearing now so that's strange. Never noticed that preview tool before - very handy. Some keywords still just say the same in the tool that they don't trigger any of your ads so didn't really give me a reason why as the pages have high quality scores and the keywords appear in the ads. I changed some to phrase match and they still don't trigger any ads and some say they don't trigger any ads but when you use the tool it says they do so I am well confused now.

OK some obvious checks...

Budget OK?
Location Settings OK?
Ad Scheduling OK?
Ads approved?
Campaign is active / start date?

The KW status bubble can be misleading, for example if you set specific locations settings the bubble status can say your ad isn't displaying due to location restrictions, or if you've set match type campaigns & used exact negative KWs to force ad serving from the other campaign, again this will say your ads aren't displaying (but they will).

WRT to your new phrase match KWs, what's the KW status now? Is it eligible or still LSV?

Hi Andrew
Ok a few which I changed to phrase do seem to be appearing now but there are still quite a few that say LSV and when I typed one in the preview tool it says this keyword doesn't trigger any of your ads but the keywords are in the ad just not altogether as a phrase?

also a few that say LSV are age + keyword and I have the keyword also on it's own so maybe I should set that to broad to catch the ages?

Thanks

Hi Lianne,

Use Modified Broad, the way to do this is select broad match but start each word in your Keyword with a +

eg +Edinburgh +Hotels or +Edinburgh +City +Centre +Hotels

By adding a + to the word you are telling Google that word (or close synonym) must be included within the search query (in any order).

So it provides much more reach but with better control. As I mentioned previously keep on top of your negative keywords when using BMM, if you have time I would do it daily as first to eliminate any obvious irrelevancies.

Hi Andrew
Thanks, so for your example

eg +Edinburgh +City +Centre +Hotels

if people just typed in Edinburgh hotels would it still come up or do I need a separate keyword in the list for that so +Edinburgh +hotels and I don't need another one for singular hotel right?

If you set a KW +edinburgh +city +centre +hotels

and the search query is Edinburgh Hotels

Your ad would not be served

All 4 words have to appear in the search query (in any order) for your ad to be served.

If you want your ad to be served for Edinburgh Hotels or Edinburgh Hotel then yes you can use a KW +Edinburgh +Hotels and your ad would be served for both queries.

Obviously for that actual KW you would use exact match, I'm just using this as example of how BMM works.

Also bear in mind if you have 2 separate ad groups, one for +edinburgh +city +centre +hotels and one for +Edinburgh +Hotels

either ad could be served for the search query Cheapest Hotels in Edinburgh City Centre so to negate this you would add City Centre as a negative KW to the Edinburgh Hotels ad group (at ad group level).

Hope that helps
