It would be extremely naive to think that you could establish, profitably, a business to rival Groupon, for an investment of £5k. Even if you could get the website and system for that, you would have to deliver the infrastructure of the business, and the significant amount of traffic vital for it to work.

Good Post. Thank you.

Interesting comment in the closing sentence with respect to " Ways to compete could have been taking the model to a niche (rather than go head to head against the mass of competition) or alternatively putting resources into finding a novel way to build a customer list."

To this reguard, I would not write off the OP's idea. I can see a number of markets here in the UK that nobody is in and also an innovation based on this Groupon theme. Cheers, K.

Yes and that post was made over a year ago.

I am a regular reader of TechCrunch and have noticed their opinion of the sustainability of the Groupon model has changed significantly in recent months.

e.g there have been a lot of posts like these:

Groupon Was “The Single Worst Decision I Have Ever Made As A Business Owner”

Why Groupon Is Poised For Collapse

That second headline is a bit dramatic and may be exaggerating the situation but it contains some valid points.

It's a saturated market and businesses are beginning to realise that they can't continue to afford to give discounts to customers if it doesn't bring significant repeat customers who are prepared to pay the 'going rate'.
