WARNING: Utility Warehouse (Telecom Plus PLC)

If you use this company for Landline, mobile telephones, broadband AND Gas and Electricty check your "invoices." If the invoice has combined VAT and three VAT numbers on it, report it to HMRC VAT department for advise. They may also tell you to report the matter as well. I cannot really say anymore but anyone who is "VAT savvy" will know what this means.

Whilst I am claiming resitution from this company if anyone wants to join me they can. Regards John.

The Utility Warehouse do not use this site, they "employ" Independant Distributors who probabaly do use the site to "sell the company" and get a residual income each month. Strange post maybe but I would check the issue with three VAT numbers on one invoice and you will know what I mean. If you want details then I will reply personally.

We used them years ago but they became uncompetitive so we moved. However we still do have one 0800 number with them, stuck on what is now an unbelievably high tariff. It's widely advertised so we can never risk just discontinuing it, but because of the number range it's in, we can't seem to find a provider to whom we can move it. I've raised the issue with them several times and they have been polite but unhelpful if that makes sense!

I will check the invoices ref: vat numbers as suggested by the OP. I'm guessing that three vat numbers are for different services that they offer? I know gas has 5% vat instead of 15%, but there shouldn't be an issue with charging different items at different rates of the same invoice.

If you only have an 0800 number with them you maybe okay but I would double check with HMRC as what voids it is the three VAT numbers shown on the bills. HMRC rules on VAT you cannot use more than one VAT number on an invoice. The say they can as they are a "managment company" HMRC dont agree with this and I was told to call the VAT fraud line.
You may find that you will have to ask them for an invoice with one VAT number on to claim back the VAT legally, but if the "invoice" shows three numbers this could still void it.
Hint as they only resell the freephones numbers (I think) you might be able to trace the service provider.
I know when I managed to port my number it came back that "your number had been transffered from "T Mobile" !

I think that the thread originator might be confusing the requirement to use sequential invoice numbers with vat numbers.

since vat liability is different for each part of the TelecomPlus Group, it is a legal requirement to provide each vat number on an invoice, & as long as it is easy to see which vat limit applies to each portion of the invoice no breach is occurring.

I hope that clears up this scare mongering.

I have looked into this thoroughly since this member first drew my attention to this and I was relieved to find out from HMRC that the way we bill customers is legally correct providing we inform them of the different VAY number, which we do. The reason we have different VAT numbers is because we have three perts to our company but bill customers on one detailed bill. The VAT is calculated correctly for each of the services and of course full returns are submitted on time to the HMRC VAT division.

I can understand that some people do not like UW and have their own personal reasons, but publishing threads which are suggesting that we are operating unlawfully, is outrageous and slanderous. I hope that the moderators will stop any further posting on this VAT UW thread.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this issue further.

Out of interest did you call HMRC or T+?
4 sections (HMRC) say that you cannot have 3 VAT numbers on one invoice, both advise on setting up what T+ does on their "invoices" and you cannot do it. Also there are forms so they can legally do this, BUT they would have to incorprate the VAT into one VAT number only.
For the life of me I tried all ways and even stated the same way of doing invoices as T+ do and even sent one in. Not a valid VAT invoice.
"Could I set up three companies with three different VAT numbers?" "Yes" How about invoicing, could I invoice from all three with the three VAT numbers?" "No you would have to issue seperate invoices" How could I do this? "You would need a VAT number to cover all three companies forms 50 and 51" "There is a company doing this under a managment company they put all the VAT together and quoute all three VAT numbers and how it is split." "Report company on the Freephone number they cannot do this."

If anyone wants I will find a way of uploading the telephone calls to my website and then you can listen to them.

Update as CF are involved as are others. Company states "HMRC told then to do this" then "have a special dispensation to do this." Called HMRC and they said "Would not have been told this by HMRC" as to dispensation "no such thing to break VAT laws!"
Yes I can encode to MP3 have about five calls now about this.
Company told to invoice correctly and to the right person, & they just ignored it!
