Advice on Prototype...

Hi
I'm looking for a individual/company to help me make a prototype of an idea I have. It's nothing hi-tech or complicated engineering!! The product will be made of the similiar sorts of materials found in a childs travel cot - so some kind of nylon (or similiar) netting and material with straps and possibly velcro fastenings. The materials (like a travel cot) would need to be baby/child safe. I have no real experience in this area or of fabric design/properties (so I would need steering on choice of materials etc). I have a VERY rough prototype - but am really looking for help to create something that could actually be manufacturered initially with a short run of <500. Obviously, I would expect an NDA to be signed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I have a similar problem, basically I believe that there would be a market for a rlatively simple device in the home.

It would be made of plastic and would have to connect to mains electricity.

Ideally, if it`s possible to patent it, make a prototype and then sell the idea to some big players in the market, that`s what i would rather do.

Anyone know how you find out if something is patentable?

Basically, something might be patentable if it is not obvious, has a real purpose, can actually be made i.e. doesn't defy the laws of physics, and most importantly - if it hasn't already been patented or already exists. Having said that it doesn't mean it will sell.

The first thing you should do is see if you can find your idea already - do the Google and also look through some online patent databases. Whatever searching you do, be thorough. Don't be afraid to find your idea altready exists - it will save greater heatbreak later (and maybe money too).

Hi Brucey,

If it's not that complex then and you have already have a rough prototype then its possible you only need the design specs (3D models, Drawings/BoM) to approach manufacturers. You will also be able to send this to different manufacturers and get comparable quotations. I run a freelance product design company Aximo Limited and specialize in engineering/design.…PM me if you like a chat.
