The most important thing when cold calling is your opening line and conversation starter.
The worst thing you can do is open with the same boring stuff such as:
Avoid current buzz words or trending lines, such as ‘reaching out’ or ‘thank you for asking’ and please don’t suck up to me. Remember it is repetitive jargon that we all hear too much and too often.
So how should you do it?
At HFE Signs, we don’t do any cold calling – it’s never been something we’re a fan of, however like most companies we do receive quite a few, hence this advice!
At HFE, we advertise our Printed Signs and Banners in places where our customers are likely to find us. We work very hard on maintaining returning customers and recommendations, we offer the best service possible and a 10% loyalty discount. We always have plenty of special offer banners and signs to keep our customers interested.
When it comes to cold calling, you need to be direct, to the point and honest. For example, something like the below is much more likely to get me interested (assuming I’m in the market for banners).
“Hi [name] – I know you’re really busy, I just wanted to quickly make you aware of our new special offer – THREE 8ftx3ft banners for just 108 quid delivered and you can mix the designs. No worries if you don’t need any, just didn’t want you to miss out.”
If I was looking for banners, that would get my attention much better than all the ‘How are you today?’ nonsense and other unmeaningful questions.
Unfortunately, marketers have misled people with statistics that claim the longer you have someone on the phone the more likely you are to get a result – I’m not disputing the statistic, however the time spent should be them asking about the offer or product, not you asking about their feelings, emotions or their day!
And finally, the offer I mention about banners above is real – we do offer three 8ft x 3ft banners for just £108 delivered (or £90+vat) to any UK address. We also offer a free design service and next working day delivery as standard on all printed banners.
*Some remote locations do have a courier surcharge.
The worst thing you can do is open with the same boring stuff such as:
- How is your day going?
- Hope you are doing great this week.
- What is the weather like where you are?
- Have you had a good weekend?
- What are you doing for the bank holiday?
- What are your thoughts on [something in the news or sports]?
