    Holidays and “full time” employees

I can’t find any definition of what is classed as “full-time”. I have two employees. One is on 40 hours, the other is on 35 hours. Both work very irregular hours. Full-time holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks holiday per year. Should both employees get the same amount of holiday per year, even...

Employing someone for the first time

Hi Mr D. We want someone who is committed to the business and over whom we have a bit more control. Subcontractors are good but they are free to accept or decline work as they wish and they sometimes prioritise the clients. We need somebody for whom we are the priority so we have put...

Employing someone for the first time

I’m not sure if it’s best to post on here or to create a new thread but I thought I would first post here so that people can see how things have progressed and maybe help them when they are making similar decisions at the start of a business. So, we are now just over a year on from my last...

Rates relief on more than 1 property

Thank you for the clarification on the "occupation" viewpoint - that precedent is worth noting! I notice that the wording is "main property", rather than existing property. So, could we class the new, larger, property as the main property? Yes, we've looked at moving to a single larger...

Rates relief on more than 1 property

Thank you Rach88. I did wonder! What about this scenario... One property is a unit that falls within the relief bracket (8k rateable value). The other property is a unit within a shared office block on which we wouldn't pay rates because the rates are included in the rent.

Rates relief on more than 1 property

I have just read this on the .gov website: "If you use more than one property When you get a second property, you’ll keep getting any existing relief on your main property for 12 months." What about the second property? Does this mean we'll get relief on them both for 12 months, after which...

Employing someone for the first time

Hi Chris. Yes I know what you mean about them leaving. If the business didn't grow to a stage where we could offer them a lot more hours then we'd probably pack it in too! What we're trying to do is dip our toe in, see if we can make it work and if it does then our employees can grow with us.

Employing someone for the first time

Many thanks for your replies. Cyndy, the work we have can change from week to week, depending on clients' needs and seasonal demand, so we could need someone for 3 hours a week for 8 weeks and then nothing for a few weeks, then maybe 10 hours a week. The plan would be to get to a stage where...

Employing someone for the first time

Hi. I am looking to take someone on, part time, on an employed basis. We sell personal training in hourly slots so, for now, I can only offer the employee a few hours to cover these slots but if we sell more slots then they will need someone to cover them. Initially there will only be a few...

Being a partnership and a sole trader at the same time

Thank you for your reply @The Accountancy Lab. So... If, for example, the partnership makes 25k profit and I make 25k loss as a sole trader. What do I pay tax on? I'm thinking it would be: 12.5k profit from partnership (my half of the 25k) Minus 25k loss as as a sole trader = net profit of...

Being a partnership and a sole trader at the same time

I am a sole trader and I am looking to set up a partnership as well. The two businesses will both be in the same industry but with the partnership, obviously, I will be sharing everything with my partner. The plan is to open a fitness studio as a partnership and rent out space to personal...

Claiming back petrol expenses paid to employees

Employees who use their own car for trips made during the course of business are entitled to 45p per mile (for the first 10,000 miles). Q1: Does the employer have to pay this expense to the employee or can they claim it from HMRC? If so how do they claim it back? Q2: If the employer does pay...

Fitness business looking to take on a trainer - help needed please.

I have a small sole-trader personal training and bootcamp business, which is starting to expand. I am looking to take on one person (either self-employed or employed) to provide bootcamp and personal training sessions. There are three types of work for which they will be paid at different...
