Most people dont take these charges into account so they probably see the sterling going up and down every day and think its much of a muchness. They must be making enough off you on margins:)

Could i speculate that the payments arent so big. Otherwise your suppliers in in europe are losing up to 4% on cashing the sterling cheques.
I didnt pay transfer fees using transfermate.com but did pay them using xe but they say they arent fees and instead call them wire fees.
Again...
i have used the banks in the past and although transfer fees may seem cheap, rates are rubbish, try xe and transfermate.com . a quick phone call should tell you whats cheapest

moneybookers tends to handle small sums alright but for larger sums they are expensive and painful
