Where Do You See Your Business Headed in 2014?

For my business, I am very lucky in some respects, when I set up originally about 6 years ago, the banks didn't want to know... so although it has been an uphill struggle at times, there is no debt - I owe no one ! - I am not on a large scale - far from it... for me, this year is about...

Impossible Competition, loss leaders and having your throat cut !

to quote 100312 We all hear about @herewegoagain moaning about this competition but the high price from his wholesalers plus his mark up simply isn't creating employment. This goes for all you small shops! Its illegal what they do, but by employing so many people its a big chunk of the income...

Impossible Competition, loss leaders and having your throat cut !

Hello Chris, yes, I do get some stock from the supermarkets - Easter Eggs are a prime example- they are half price to me - compared to the wholesalers !! -and I add value by gift wrapping and adding lollies, chocolate mini eggs to them etc - as a proper gift - I just find it annoying that I...

Impossible Competition, loss leaders and having your throat cut !

well in theory !! lol they are there this afternoon !! the whole point of my original post is to show how products get devalued - to the point no one - not even the supermarkets - make money on them.... it just winds me up.... I am a bit old fashioned, a hard working bloke trying to make a...

Impossible Competition, loss leaders and having your throat cut !

Cheers for your reply, Asda has a small convenience store around the corner - and yes I did check the day before yesterday to see if they had them in - they didnt at the time !! Like most independents, I offer good service, but even this would make stocking lines like this pointless - people...

    Advertising your prices/charges

Although I am in retail, I would suggest putting a 'special offer' on your flyers, then listing your services - creating the customers interest... you can then give them pricing upon contact. For example, in my shop, I do not price items in the shop window, creating interest, the price is on...

Impossible Competition, loss leaders and having your throat cut !

I make an apology in advance if this comes over negative... just fuming - !! I have just taken into stock (today) a certain Easter confectionery item, branded, costing me £2.65 plus VAT at trade price - now I am very careful about what I stock, because of the supermarkets and this was the best...

    The Sweet Shop thread!

Good advice from MHALL - Ronnie, your shop I would imagine is a destination - same as mine - I too sell retro sweets, the world and his wife sell sweets now - but you are offering something special, I think your prices are reasonable - I sell at 79p 100g for pick n mix, then 89p, 99p 100g then...

Quiet? Where are all the Christmas Shoppers?!

For me the bottom line is this - there is precious little spare cash about - whether it be down south or up north, people are not spending on anything other than essentials, then they are shopping around for the cheapest on these... I am seeing the quietest run up to Christmas for 6 years - I...

Quiet? Where are all the Christmas Shoppers?!

Quiet here too - well prepared, lots of browsers, plenty of people mooching about - but not many carrying bags - I work on the principle that once the good people have been paid at the end of Nov - or had their Giro's (!) it will be a mad rush - hope so - I have holiday money to find !! LOL x

Street Markets, shops and the council that is being shortsighted !

I understand totally where you are coming from, from my own business point of view I am busier when there is NOT a market on... There is a huge, and I mean huge, 'meat van/market butcher' lorry that literally takes up the width of three shops !! blocking the view but luckily not the access to...

Street Markets, shops and the council that is being shortsighted !

Hello Pen, it is new stallholders, from what I have been told they are a bit 'green' - with the greatest of respect, not realising about saturation ! The market is very well established, it just seems that the council are putting 'anything' on there to fill a stall without thinking about...

Street Markets, shops and the council that is being shortsighted !

But my point is it is saturation, surely even the people setting up the stalls (bearing in mind two stalls) would think, well there is already an established business selling similar lines, - to me that would dilute your customer base !
