I've tried several of the free products out there like phpbb. I don't know if it is better now, but it was a real magnet for automatic tools signing up for accounts and posting rubbish.

Buy a beginning PHP book (yes, an actual book!) Either use this as well as online learning or even instead of - personally I find it easier to learn something significant from a book rather than web tutorials even though there are some very good ones out there, and at the very least a good book...
With the old system I can't remember having a single problem in two years... now strange things seem to happen from time to time, and occasional problems with payments have crept in. What happened to 'if it ain't broke don't fix it?'
The new interface is also unintuitive as others have said...
A good lesson on de-bugging code there: if you look and look at a line of code and all seems fine, then use echo statements around the code to print the relevant string or array values in isolation. This proves very useful at pinpointing what the real problem is more often than not.

Starting a forum is very hard work!
My suggestion would be to rope in five to ten friends who post or comment on one or two threads a day, then over the course of a few months you'll start to get some regular content and this will both help people to find the forums through searches etc and...
