I have had sales within a few days by using Google Adwords. But I do think you get better quality traffic with SEO.
Adwords is good to start with and learn which keywords convert, SEO is good for the long run in my opinion.

If you are growing and have a fair amount of stock to manage, I would go for some sort of paid software that is fairly inexpensive and scaleable as you grow.
Free ones can be pretty restrictive, the dollar savings often don't reflect the savings in time and efficiency.
