I wont be taking on the company, just the clients. the company will inform all clients that i will be taking over all duties so they will fall under my company umbrella. its a way the company will prevent the clients being left out in the cold with no support.
a local business is deciding to close their doors, and have offered me the opp to take on all their clients, they have gone to great lengths to document ins, outs, everything earnt to date, projected earnings, upcoming work etc for each client.
they have put this out to several local companies...
Thanks all. I have pretty much decided to go ahead with it. I don't think it would replace IT, but as a fallback for quieter periods between contracts. The feast / famine environment that working for yourself brings can be stressful, so a second skill would help plug those gaps.
I am a software developer in my early forties. I have been in IT for around 20 years.
I feel as if i need a change, there isnt a lot left in IT that i havent done.
I also enjoy DIY, been doing it for a while for friends and family.

Infinite loops are possible in any language, and strictly speaking testing on a server is never wise, local first! :)
Ah yes, PPH, odesk, etc... i would describe such sites as a holding pen for everything that is wrong in the industry. And the good guys on there, like you say, charge the...
I am not surprised you were struggling to find classic asp developers, it's a language that hasn't been used for quite some time, and developers/agencies go where the demand is.
As for PHP and when you say scarier, how do you mean?
As a freelancer, what would help me in understanding how to work with agencies, would be to know what it is like to run one. My definition of an agency is one that has its own office, with several employees, directors, etc.
I hear a lot from friends that run them, that they spend most of their...
Agencies charging many thousands is a problem that exists in many industries, and as a result, we are all tarred with the same brush. I agree that it is easier than it has ever been to create a small brochure site, it's when the business outgrows wordpress and it's plugins that they come looking...
