I personally think the domain-rush back-in-the-day was part myth. Some of the best domains were either unavailable, impossible to register (like 2-3 character domains) or sold for big sums instead of the registration fee.

Its a good tip - one I use myself, however, people want to generate trust with people they communicate with online and I noticed it can backfire when things don't match up - especially on business orientated forums and websites!
