The UKBF blog: Making the leap

Welcome to the first entry in the UK Business Forums Blog. UKBF is the UK's premier online business forums where every day thousands of entrepreneurs discuss and debate key issues faced by the nation's small business owners. This blog seeks to highlight some of the top tips provided by UKBF members and expand further on the issues raised.

One thread which caught my eye this week was started by UKBF member Gordon, aka 'gnaldrett'. Gordon is about to leave the RAF and would like to start his own business. However like many new entrants to the world of entrepreneurship he is unsure of exactly what to do.

Coming up with the idea and making the leap into business is often harder than actually running your new venture. There's never been a better time to start up with recent figures from the government showing the biggest number ever of start-ups in the UK. Modern technologies have also made it easier than ever to go it alone.

All very well but just how do you come up with a good idea which can become a great business?

Chris Kaday, former MD of 1980s computer giant Commodore and a regular poster on UKBF, suggests writing down all your options and various considerations for each idea. Score each option from 1 to 10 and add up the totals to see how each option compares. "This process forces you to consider the aspects in a more logical manner," he says. Chris suggests you consider the following for each of your ideas:
  • Your skills in the area of business
  • Your interest in the area of business
  • How boring over a period of time
  • Inside or outside - does it matter?
  • Manual or mental - does it matter?
  • People you know in the area of business who could help you or work with you
  • What you could add to such a business
  • Time to get started
  • Cost of getting started
  • Ease of getting business
  • Earnings per hour
