Four 2016 business incubators and accelerators

Every year, a host of new incubators and accelerators come to the forefront, and existing ones appear to be bumping up their offerings.

In particular, sector-specific incubators and accelerators seem to be on the rise, so we've rounded up a few interesting ones we've heard from over the last few weeks.

Incubus Retail: Class 2

Co-founder Rishi Chowdhury spoke to UKBF about this retail-focused incubator programme, based at Camden Market. This year, it's teamed up with PwC to find the Future of Retail startups in three areas: cyber security, internet of things and artificial intelligence.

Applications for small businesses and startups are now open and will run until 10 April and those successful will receive eight hours of mentoring over the 12 weeks, including office hours with PwC and IncuBus managers. The aim is to accelerate growth to get the business ready to raise investment. The last week will give businesses the opportunity to pitch to investors and partners. It'll be fun from coworking space Interchange Triangle where businesses will also have 24/7 hot-desking access.

Other mentors come from ASOS, Google, eBay and Amazon. Previous successful incubator participants include Nari Juice, now stocked in Selfridges and Food Foundry, who is opening its first kitchen.

Applicants are picked on a rolling basis and there's a £3,600 fee for the programme.

Drugstore Retail Lab

Despite the name, this incubator is for startups in ecommerce, mobile payments, point-of-sale, stock management and buying and selling.

It's brought about by Publicis Worldwide and The Trampery, who want to bring together startups and large corporates.

It'll be situated in The Trampery's Old Street building and will host a series of events to connect startups with senior corporate figures, as well as the opportunity to apply for investment from a €10m Publicis 90 fund.

The package for selected businesses comprises:

  • Dedicated working space
  • Open-ended membership
  • Promotion as part of London's elite group of retail innovators
  • Senior introductions to Publicis retail clients worldwide
  • Tailored programme of workshops and speakers from retail leaders
  • Access to Publicis strategists to support business development
  • Free drop-in facilities at Publicis offices in 330 cities around the world
There is a monthly fee of £450 per person with a minimum commitment of three months. Despite the closing date for submissions having passed, they may consider some late applications.

Winton Labs

Thirdly, we have an accelerator aimed at data-driven startups in the CRM, data management, compliance and government and artificial intelligence sectors. It's launched by investment management firm Winton Capital and L Marks.

It's a 10-week programme that's looking for early stage companies that may have raised money from angel investors, but are looking for either seed money or a Series A.

The programme involves industry based mentoring from people at Winton Capital Management as well as business mentoring from external industry leaders. In addition, the teams can participate in workshops and go to speaker events. The programme aims to be a springboard for small businesses looking for exposure to investors and customers in the financial services sector.

Bathtub 2 Boardroom

This incubator fills empty commercial space with entrepreneurs who have limited capital and it currently has two 'Bathtubs' in London.

Membership is £50 per desk per month and includes free support services and Bathtub events. There are various options though and reductions for certain entrepreneurs (i.e if you're starting a registered charity and those setting up after a long period of unemployment).

It itself is a non-for-profit charity with the aim of helping people create jobs for themselves and others through entrepreneurship and creativity. It gives anyone wanting to start and grow a business with resources, such as training, mentoring, and a diverse start-up community.
