WorldPay and Streamline - Who does what?

Streamline is the business that operates Worldpay. Worldpay is a Payment Gateway that can be used to collect money online and over the phone, Streamline is also the brand they use when providing EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) services.

What do you want to be able to do?

All the best.

To elaborate on what Tim has already advised, Streamline will be providing the merchant account and in turn the merchant ID which is used to process credit and debit card payments either via your website or over the telephone. Worldpay is the Payment Gateway, but you can use other Payment Gateways with a Streamline merchant account and this can often work out cheaper. We for example work out a fair deal cheaper than Worldpay for low-volume merchants. You can use most shopping carts with a merchant account/Payment Gateway. You can find a list of several popular carts on our website - click the link in my signature to find out more.

If you wanted to use an alternative Payment Gateway such as ourselves simply tell Streamline when you get your quote that you want to use another provider - such as Total Web Solutions.

If you would like to discuss using our service with a Streamline merchant account please drop me a PM with your details or give me a call: 0161 947 4950 - Opt 1

Thanks,

Simon

Hello Tim,

Why do I need both? I have account with both of them, but for the life of me can't figure out why I had to engage with both arms.

I know this much....they each get their cut!

Many thanks,

Dave
Hi Dave

There are several possible reasons but most likely, I guess, is that you haven't got a 'Merchant Account' from your bank? To take money via the internet you need the following three things:

  1. an 'ecommerce enabled' website - this will have the 'shopping trolley', simple or complex (we can help with this, if you'd care to look into it, via our web design sub-division (DesignM8) and our hosting & domains provider (InternetM8)!)
  2. a 'payment gateway' to actually do the card processing - tightly regulated and mega expensive 'playing field' to play on, there are many available
  3. a 'merchant account' which receives the monies collected by the payment gateway
Some payment gateway providers can only act if you have your own merchant account but some, like Worldpay can give you both - it's just that they don't do it under 'one lable', they do it under two!

I repeat my question from my earlier reply: "what is it you want to do?"

All the best

Tim

CharityClear

Hi,

Streamline basically provide your merchant account and Worldpay is your payment gateway. We have a basic diagram on our site, just replace the word CharityClear with Worldpay and that's what you have just now https://www.charityclear.com/merchant-account-payment-gateway/

I would also add that Worldpay rates can be very expensive. We also have a price comparison table on our site that highlights this https://www.charityclear.com/.

Regards,

Marc.

With WorldPay it is a historic issue. WorldPay started out as an independent payment service provider and was then bought by Royal Bank of Scotland. Streamline was NatWest's merchant services division and again when they were bought by RBS they became the Group's brand. RBS then decided to rebrand everything RBS WorldPay (this also included a number of other divisions including BiBit another PSP) and I think had that continued down that route then they would have become more and more merged.

However, RBS were forced to sell them off and they have been bought by Advent International and Bains two US private equity firms, so what happens next is anyone's guess.

Acquirers have gone one of two ways with regards to Payment gateways; they have either set up their own (Barclay's epdq), bought their own (up until recently RBS) or partnered with other gateways (Lloyds).

Hope this helps...

And to answer the original question, WorldPay provide the gateway between your site and the acquiring bank and Streamline act as the acquiring bank.

Payment gateways like ourselves ensure that the card data is sent to the acquring banks securely.

The acquiring bank looks after the verification of the card details (number, AVS, CVV2) and transfer of funds.

Good question.

WorldPay used to be that part of NatWest (later RBS) that handled online payments.

Streamline has been for some time NatWest's card acquirer system as you would use it for "off line" payments.

Late last year RBS sold WorldPay off and it would seem that Streamline has gone with it as a brand within WorldPay.

So it was NatWest Streamline, but now it's WorldPay Streamline and neither are owned by RBS/NatWest, although the bank uses WorldPay and its Streamline brand for card acquisition still.

Er, I hope that helps!
