I have an e-commerce website being designed and built at the moment. The designers have asked who will be hosting the website for us.

I have had a quote off UKFast - but wondered if there were any others I should be looking at?

It doesn't need a dedicated server at the moment until we see the traffic the site is attracting, but it needs to be optimized for Magento as that is the framework the site will be built on.

Any ideas?

I don't have any experience with Magento, but the obvious thing to do is ask the the website builders for recommendations. Assuming they do this regularly, they should be able to reel off list based on past projects / client feed back etc.

If you were to ask me the same question about WordPress hosting I could rattle off a list based on budget / performance / support required pretty easily.

You need to look at a Magento specialist. Magento is a beast like all others, and has specific requirements...you really need a host who is clued up on the platform.

From our experience, of hosting Magento with both NuBlue, DX3Webs and a-other, I have to say that on levels of support DX3 Webs win hands down. They are a smaller company than NuBlue, but the level of hands on support is second to non, via phone, email and skype.

Give Andy at DX3 a call....he is a member here and in most cases will get your site migrated so you can test the platform before you commit.

Make sure you look for a trusted, established real business to work with. There's tons of hosting companies out there and many disappear overnight without much warning! Some questions you can ask:
    - Registered company?
    - VAT reg?
    - Accounts up to date and posted to companies house? Do the accounts show that it isn't a "micro" business? Everyone has to start somewhere but you don't want to risk an e-commerce site with anything that looks too young/small
    - Time in business
    - Run their own datacentre, network, hardware or just resellers?
    - Owner operator or employ people? Again, you do have to start somewhere but if it is a 1 person company and they fall ill, go on holiday etc... we've all seen it happen before

As for the service for Magento itself, going for a elastic cloud style service will allow you to scale up/scale down as traffic grows, without having to migrate the site.

We'd be happy to help if our services are of interest. Alternatively, we have a lot of respect for the guys at Sonassi who are very good in the Magento space.

Just a quick question, is this site for your barcodes business? If it is then magneto isn't the right platform. If it's not for the barcodes then I will get back in my box.

Magento is resource consuming Ecommerce script you will need minimum 2 GB RAM got better performance. It does works with shared server but we have worked with many magento hosting customer I would personally suggest select any company but dedicated resource atleast VPS ( best is a dedicated server) should be what you should go for.
