My second tip (if you insist on using Twitter) would be to make sure you know exactly why you are using it, and what you hope to achieve. Once you know this, you can work out exactly how to use Twitter to help you achieve your goals.

I agree. Too many companies just follow the masses and get on Social media without any idea as to what they want to get out of it. If you're targeting business owners and managers, Facebook might not be the best choice for you.

It's often better for business' to identify and focus on a single social media platform. This way they can execute a thorough and more targeted strategy, which will deliver more desirable results.

However, many businesses are determined to be broad and maximise exposure across multiple social media platforms. For these businesses, there are a number of tools available that will make it easier. For example, I wrote an article last year describing how you can synchronise your Facebook and Twitter accounts.
    Read it here. http://www.mrswebsolutions.com/blog/how-to-guide-integrate-your-social-media-marketing/

Watch your competitor names in something like Tweetdeck and respond to businesses (possibly on the phone not on Twitter though) complaining about your competitors. I cover this, including a story or two about real businesses doing this in my video lecture on 'active' use of social media, rather than just using it to promote your content passively. -- http://techfunction.net/generating-high-quality-leads-social-media/

Don't get hung up on favourites as a sign of "engagement" (oh, what a spurious word). You want people responding to you. Hopefully, by picking up the phone and enquiring about your services, not just clicking a button that saves them in a bookmark folder that they never read.

Another thing you can do is aggregate an RSS feed to your timeline but only if it's relevant to your followers. That way content is constantly being tweeted and your timelien can act as an RSS reader.

Be careful with this tip though since it is associated with spam and you don't want to be tweeting out garbage.

I run everything via a free app called TwitterFeed which allows me to append hashtags and @ mentions.

Don't automatically link your twitter to facebook - I feel that they are different audiences with different expectations. A post on one doesn't necessarily translate to the other.

Yeah, agreed. And the Tweet truncates the Facebook status too so you lose some of the info.

Also, the FB short links are clearly displayed which smacks of automation.

Twitter is a conversational tool and not a platform to sell. Connect with your target audience and develop and relationship with them. Refrain from try to sell at any point. If your dialogue and content is good, they will come to you.

The days of a quick sale are gone (although some still abuse every channel going). Think long term and think about how you can be different. Even a few words can really make someones day or inspire them,

I wish more people could understand that. The tweetchats are the worst - People endlessly post their begging pitches appended with a hashtag. So lazy.

No 1 mistake made by alomost everyone is they figure Twitter = Sales, its not for that at all.

Twitter is a blog, a conversation platform, sort of like a forum, but more for instant 'chats', you cant do sales on it cos you get minimal characters, so sales pitches is out. Twitter is good for recommendations though eg: look at this kool site, or listing what a biz has been upto etc.

theres too much direct selling being done and its boring, how would you like to be heavily plugged to every time you view a twitter account, I see it all the time and its irritating.

Let it be your referral gold mine by congratulating others on their fine posts, thanking them for their efforts and recommending them to your followers. Your odds of being mentioned / recommended in their timeline goes up astronomically once you've taken the first act of kindness.

Remember the rules of netiquette in showing your likeable self as you socialise with others. It's a place of banter and sharing, not broadcasting with no intention of listening for a response.

After trying/testing all kinds of things with my Twitter account, I have to agree with others that its mostly a conversation tool. Like this forum or reddit or anything else.

Getting leads/business is always about conversation and connecting. Who is going to give you their money without viewing your past conversations or spending some time conversing with you themselves?

    #1: Complete Your Profile
#2: Connect With People in Your Niche
    #3: Share Valuable Content
    #4: Participate in Twitter Chats
#5: Include Your Twitter URL in Your Author Bio

Such a broad subject, so many pitfalls to avoid.
My tip for Local growth as a business is to take part in 'local hours' Many towns and cities offer (usually run by a local business leader' twitter hours, where local companies all tweet with the same hashtag, then RT and Fav each other’s. Think of it as a digital networking hour.
If you wish for more national or global coverage then I'd suggest using the many thousands of services which will 'Tweet for you' they tweet to their audience (so choose one that has a large following) pre-defined tweets using your twitter handle. We used a service as this and gained 'real' followers, a substantial amount. However, these followers are not necessarily the demographic you require.
Ultimately, the only way you can be successful on twitter is to try and see what works for you, and your business. I would also suggest, before you go ahead and engage under your companies name, try it personally for a while, and get the feel of it. Learn about it and understand its workings. It’s surprising how hard it is (at the beginning) to tell your story in 140 characters.
